![]() Look, if you're reading this, you probably already "get it" when it comes to the importance of opening what Dr. Governments have shown they are unable to make it efficient, and they certainly can't take it to scale. We need to get our best minds out there, to observe and help us understand what is happening down here, but also to develop new technologies and ways to save the planet, create new products such as medicines and to begin utilizing the resources of space to take the pressure off our home world. With the climate almost literally melting down, economies cracking under the coronavirus pandemic and people lost in a fog of disunity and pessimism, we need the space revolution to succeed, not instead of or in spite of these other challenges, but because it can help us win them all. This wouldn't be so bad if we didn't need to open space quickly, or if governments hadn't blown the job over the last few decades. Be it Musk and his President Donald Trump-style tweeting, Branson playing the playboy, or Bezos building his billions on what some see as the backs of an underpaid Amazon workforce, they paint their own targets on themselves.īlue Origin founder Jeff Bezos stands with a mockup of the company's Blue Moon robotic lunar lander during its unveiling on May 9, 2019. ![]() And frankly, when it comes to positive messaging, the Space Barons suck. While those in the space field understand the goal is to open space to everyone by lowering costs over time, the fact that the initial spaceflight customers aren't "everyone" sends a bad message. A social movement ready to upend the social order in the name of saving the planet and its people will attack the very people investing their wealth to try and save the people and the planet. In the eyes of today's cultural rebels, the pioneering efforts of these space revolutionaries will be seen as stereotypical of the same extreme, concentrated male wealth and power that has driven the Earth to the brink of disaster. It will not matter that throughout history it has often been the wealthy who invested in or supported major research programs, built the railroads, funded the ships that opened seas and the planes that opened the skies - their investments eventually creating the low-cost infrastructure for the rest of society to utilize. The mood will become increasingly anti-waste, anti-greed and anti-corporate, as social agendas blend with environmental goals. Prodded by the tears in our social fabric revealed by the coronavirus pandemic and the social justice movement now underway, the Elysium effect will escalate dramatically after the 2020 presidential election, as a rising "green generation" of socially active post millennials begins a long needed cultural shift towards planetary stewardship. Bezos' Blue Origin and Branson's Virgin Galactic will charge over $200,000 for excursions to the edge of space, while newcomer Axiom Space Systems and SpaceX will offer flights to and beyond the International Space Station for a few tens of millions, and even loop the Moon for a just few hundred million more. Things will get worse when the next wave of terribly branded "space tourists" begin to fly. Yet these visionaries, who author Christian Davenport called " The Space Barons (opens in new tab)" are often portrayed as rich boys with fancy toys. And while they may not be the cuddliest of people, just look at their other projects and goals: Musk builds electric cars and solar power systems, Bezos wants to move polluting heavy industry off planet - even as Amazon pushes towards zero emissions, and Branson is a long time champion of social and environmental causes. Though they have many flaws, including the accumulation of lots of money, these space pioneers are actually trying to do something good for humanity and the planet. ![]() ![]() They should never be kept in a heated tank or in an overly hot room. Anyone who relies on the public data in some counties' GIS records may find that little fact useful when adding building heights. DĪlso, some county property records get a height of buildings on file. I'm keeping the amount of money I spend on MapMaker as low as I can until I see a check back from it. This is the most sane approach I've devised short of going to the building myself with a tape measure or actual professional measurement systems that likely cost hundreds. Typical heights I've found are 15', 25', 125', and the occasional 22' and 27' in the US. If it's within 2' of a heightĭivisible by 5, I typically round to the nearest 5 or 0, or what seems like a reasonable number for this building. (very few buildings have a height divisible by 7), and use that toĬalculate a rough estimate of the height. ![]() I just count the squares, and guesstimate the remainder on the last bit Stack 'em up! There, it's just a matter of counting how tall the building is in street Thanks to this little observation, that tells me that square is ~7' tall. 98% of the time, that square has been the exact same height as the doorįunny enough, I think I picked a door in that 2% range to use as an example. Place that square plane that the cursor makes against a building with a doorway. ![]() That square inside the orange box appears when the cursor is pushed to a wall in street view Sometimes the street view is smart enough to place it against the building wall if it's close enough. In street view, when you move the zoom cursor out far enough, it sets itself against an invisible wall. There's maybe a 1 or 2 inch variance, but when you're talking building heights, I doubt we're gonna care about a few inches here and there. It looks to be ~7' tall after measuring in person around my office and apartment. I took the time to determine how tall a typical doorframe is on or in a building. A notable trend is crowdsourced street view imagery, facilitated by services such as Mapillary and KartaView, in some cases furthering geographical coverage and temporal granularity, at a permissive licence.Oh, I actually have a way of figuring out heights on buildings that's been pretty accurate with around a 2-3' variance when I actually do find a number later on. The main findings are that: (i) street view imagery is now clearly an entrenched component of urban analytics and GIScience (ii) most of the research relies on data from Google Street View and (iii) it is used across myriads of domains with numerous applications – ranging from analysing vegetation and transportation to health and socio-economic studies. We screened more than 600 recent papers to provide a comprehensive systematic review of the state of the art of how street-level imagery is currently used in studies pertaining to the built environment. Such surge has been mainly catalysed by the proliferation of large-scale imagery platforms, advances in computer vision and machine learning, and availability of computing resources. Street view imagery has rapidly ascended as an important data source for geospatial data collection and urban analytics, deriving insights and supporting informed decisions. ![]() “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” Upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long That your wives and your children may be blessed.” “Pray in your families unto the Father, always in my name, “We talk of Christ that our children may know to what source they may look “Train up a child in the way he should go:Īnd when he is old, he will not depart from it.” “Be thou humble and the Lord thy God shall give thee answer to thy prayers.” “And they shall also teach their children to pray, “If he shall pray and not with real intent of heart, it profiteth him nothing.” “The Lord is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.” “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, “Ask, and it shall be given you seek, and ye shall find ![]() When you do it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it to me.” “I was hungry and ye gave me meat I was a stranger and ye took me in.
